About Clay Target Shooting in New Zealand
Clay target shooting is a popular sport in New Zealand that combines skill, precision, and outdoor recreation. This dynamic shooting discipline involves participants using shotguns to break clay targets launched into the air by mechanical throwers.
The sport offers various disciplines including:
- Down-The-Line (DTL): The most common format in New Zealand
- Skeet: Targets thrown from high and low houses
- Sporting Clays: Simulated hunting situations
Clay target shooting is regulated under New Zealand firearms laws, making clubs like Whatitiri essential for providing safe, supervised environments for both newcomers and experienced shooters to enjoy the sport. The social atmosphere and structured environment of club shooting make it an excellent way to learn proper firearm handling and safety protocols while enjoying the outdoors.
