The Health Benefits of Tai Chi for Older Adults 🧘‍♀️

Tai Chi, often described as "meditation in motion," is an ancient Chinese practice that has been scientifically proven to offer numerous health benefits, particularly for older adults. The Age Concern Otago program uses the Tai Chi for Arthritis sequence, based on Sun Style Tai Chi, which features more upright postures and smaller foot movements.

Evidence-Based Benefits:

  • Reduces falls risk by up to 70% according to clinical studies
  • Improves balance, strength and flexibility
  • Enhances postural awareness and movement control
  • Promotes deeper breathing and relaxation
  • Supports overall mobility and joint health

Though designed primarily for those over 65, our classes welcome anyone interested in experiencing the gentle power of Tai Chi. The practice is particularly valuable for those seeking to maintain independence and prevent falls through improved balance and body awareness.

Each session follows a structured format that gradually builds skills while accommodating individual abilities. As a Level 2 activity, this class is ideal for those who can walk independently and have reasonable mobility, but modifications are available to suit different comfort levels.

Regular practice of Tai Chi can lead to improved confidence in everyday movements, better sleep quality, reduced stress, and an enhanced sense of wellbeing. Join our supportive community and discover how this ancient practice can help you maintain vitality and independence.
