What is Hash House Harriers?
Hash House Harriers, often called "the drinking club with a running problem," is a worldwide phenomenon that combines fitness with social activity. This non-competitive running and walking group originated in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting for runs to rid themselves of their weekend hangovers.
The concept follows a "hare and hounds" trail, where one or more members (the hares) lay down a trail using various markers for the rest of the group (the hounds) to follow. The trails often include false leads, short cuts, and dead ends to keep the pack together regardless of running ability.
Modern Hash House Harriers groups maintain the tradition of combining physical activity with social interaction. The "ON ON" after-run gathering is a crucial part of the experience, where participants can relax, share stories, and build friendships. This unique blend of exercise and socialising has helped Hash House Harriers spread to thousands of locations worldwide, creating a global community of running enthusiasts.
