Description of Upright & Active: Senior Fitness Class in Matamata

🧓 Upright & Active is a fitness class specifically designed for the 60+ age group at The Fire Station in Matamata. This class provides an overall fitness focus with plenty of strength and balance content. Chairs are available for everyone to assist with balance.

This class is suitable for those with limited mobility as well as people with reasonable mobility who can move around without difficulty.

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Cost: $4 entry fee
  • Location: The Fire Station, 9 Peria Road, Matamata
  • Instructor: Heather Coffey, an experienced fitness leader

While everyone has a chair, some parts of the class have people moving away from their chairs and around the room. Bands are used to provide extra intensity in the strength work.

💪 Please wear casual comfortable clothes (track pants, shorts, tights or trousers with t-shirts or sweatshirts) and lace-up or snug-fitting shoes or sneakers. For your first class, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to chat with the instructor.

Note: No classes on Public Holidays and there's a break over Christmas and New Year holidays.

Benefits of Chair-Assisted Fitness for Seniors

🔹 Chair-assisted fitness classes like Upright & Active provide excellent benefits for older adults looking to maintain or improve their physical wellbeing. These classes are specially designed to accommodate varying fitness levels while providing effective exercise options.

Strength and balance training is particularly important for Kiwi seniors, as it helps prevent falls and maintains independence. The chair serves as both a safety feature and an exercise tool, making fitness accessible to those who might otherwise be hesitant to join a class.

🔹 Research shows that regular participation in structured senior fitness programmes can:

  • Improve cardiovascular health and stamina
  • Increase muscle strength and bone density
  • Enhance flexibility and range of motion
  • Boost balance and coordination
  • Provide valuable social interaction

🔹 The supportive environment of a class specifically designed for the 60+ community creates both physical and mental health benefits. Participants can work at their own pace while still being challenged appropriately.

The use of resistance bands, as included in this class, adds variety and progressive resistance training opportunities without the need for heavy weights or complicated equipment.

With ample parking at the Fire Station Hall and a very reasonable $4 entry fee, this class offers an accessible way for Matamata seniors to stay active and connected within their community.
