Gentle strength and balance exercises are crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life as we age. These specialized workouts help prevent falls—one of the most common causes of injury among older Kiwis.
Regular participation in classes like Up & Go can provide numerous benefits:
- Improved balance and stability for everyday activities
- Increased muscle strength to support joints and maintain posture
- Enhanced flexibility for better range of motion
- Greater confidence in moving around safely
- Reduced fall risk through targeted exercises
- Social connection with like-minded people in your community
The Age Concern Steady As You Go programme has been specifically designed for older New Zealanders and follows evidence-based practices to improve physical function. The seated components make it accessible for those with mobility challenges, while the standing exercises (with chair support available) help build practical strength for daily activities.
By attending regularly, you'll likely notice improvements in everyday tasks like getting up from chairs, walking confidently, and maintaining independence. The supportive, non-competitive atmosphere ensures everyone feels comfortable regardless of their starting fitness level.
