About Community Repair Cafés in New Zealand

Repair Cafés are part of a growing sustainable living movement in Aotearoa New Zealand, combining community spirit with practical skills sharing. These volunteer-run initiatives help reduce waste, save money, and keep valuable items out of landfills.

These community workshops originated in Amsterdam in 2009 and have since spread worldwide, with New Zealand embracing the concept wholeheartedly. They're particularly valuable for our senior community members and those looking to embrace more sustainable lifestyle practices.

Repair Cafés serve multiple purposes in our communities:

  • Reducing environmental impact by extending product lifespans
  • Building community connections through skill sharing
  • Preserving traditional repair skills
  • Making repairs accessible to everyone, regardless of financial means
  • Creating social connections in local neighbourhoods

The combination of practical repair services with social interaction makes these events a cornerstone of sustainable community development in Aotearoa.
