Why Fall Prevention Exercise is Essential for Older Kiwis 🌿
Fall prevention exercises are crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life as we age. Regular participation in programmes like Steady As You Go helps to:
- Improve balance and coordination - Essential skills that naturally decline with age but can be maintained through targeted exercise
- Build strength and flexibility - Making everyday movements easier and reducing injury risk
- Boost confidence - Reducing fear of falling that often leads to activity restriction
- Enhance social connections - Creating valuable community bonds with peers
SAYGO's peer-led approach creates a welcoming atmosphere where participants support each other while improving their physical abilities. The programme has been specifically designed to accommodate various fitness and mobility levels, making it accessible to virtually all seniors.
Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older New Zealanders, with approximately one in three people over 65 experiencing a fall each year. Preventative programmes like SAYGO are proven to reduce fall risk by up to 30% by addressing key physical factors including:
- Deteriorating muscle strength
- Poor balance and coordination
- Reduced flexibility
- Slower reaction times
