Silver Swans® is a Royal Academy of Dance programme and has been running from 2017 in the UK, USA and Australia and was launched in New Zealand in 2019. These classes will help improve your mobility, posture, coordination, and energy levels. Silver Swans® teachers are all certified, experienced dance teachers who hold a licence to teach the programme. Your teacher Marilyn Swan is a Royal Academy Of Dance, Life Registered Teacher. Marilyn has taught dance for over four decades, including starting her own Dance Academy, Motueka in 1976-1991, Hawkes Bay 1992-2019. From 2019 in Coromandel, she opened an adult ballet class, also Flamenco Workshops. Nowadays Marilyn concentrates on her recreational Silver Swans® class and mentors a local teacher.
What to expect
Sessions are guided throughout by your teacher and run for 60 to 75minutes. Includes warm up and cool down, choreographed ballet sequences, exercises with and without the barre. As well as the physical benefits like strength & balance, dance is great for memory, social interaction and creativity.
The benefits of dance are well documented and research often puts dance in the top physical activities for the variety of health and social benefits that it brings. Dance classes can be great places to meet new people with a shared passion and joy for life. Whatever your age, if you are looking for a new way to keep fit and active our classes will put a spring in your step.
Who can join
This dance programme is designed for older adults with a dance background, however can accommodate adults of any age who want to dance. Some Silver Swans® have been away from Ballet class for some 50 years; these classes are ideal way of getting back into the swing of it.
A level 2/3 strength & balance class is ideal for people with reasonable to good mobility: you can move well without assistance and have average to a good level of strength & balance. Dance abilities are variable and the experience of the teacher and a watchful eye is able to assist all people as required. Private lessons available for people keen to bridge if necessary.
What to bring and wear
Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in. Tights are ideal for free movement of your legs. Bare feet to start and many then progress to light dance shoes. Advise will be given about shoe styles for your feet. Any props like scarves are provided in class. Bringing a water bottle is a great idea.
