Why Strength & Balance Exercise is Vital for Older Kiwis 💪 🧘♀️
Falls prevention exercise programmes like our Strength & Balance class are crucial for maintaining independence and wellbeing as we age. In New Zealand, approximately one in three people over 65 will experience a fall each year, with potentially serious consequences.
Regular participation in specialized strength and balance exercises can reduce your fall risk by up to 30%. These classes are specifically designed to:
- Improve leg strength and stability
- Enhance balance and coordination
- Increase confidence in everyday movements
- Maintain bone density
- Improve posture and body awareness
Our community-focused approach means you'll exercise in a supportive environment where everyone works at their own pace. Many participants report not just physical benefits, but mental wellbeing improvements too.
The social aspect of our classes shouldn't be underestimated - regular attendees form meaningful connections that extend beyond exercise. Morning teas and our bi-annual group lunches foster a sense of belonging that many find just as valuable as the physical benefits.
Research has consistently shown that early intervention with appropriate exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent falls. Even if you haven't experienced a fall, starting a strength and balance programme now can significantly reduce your risk in the future.
Our peer-led approach ensures exercises are delivered in an approachable, non-intimidating way. You'll never be pushed beyond your capabilities, and modifications ensure everyone can participate safely regardless of fitness level.
If you're noticing changes in your balance or strength, experiencing occasional unsteadiness, or simply want to be proactive about maintaining your independence, our Strength & Balance class could be exactly what you need.
