Saturday Fish Celebration Whangārei Harbour
Whangārei, Northland
A Closer Look at Celebrating Fish of the Whangārei Harbour
Imagine sparking curiosity about the underwater world right in your own backyard, especially during Seaweek when communities come together to appreciate local marine life. This special event, hosted in collaboration with the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, offers families and nature enthusiasts a chance to connect with the rich biodiversity of Whangārei Harbour. Led by marine conservationist Samara Nicholas (MNZM), Director of Mountains to Sea, the day highlights the harbour's incredible fish species and habitats, fostering a sense of shared environmental stewardship.
The event kicks off with a one-hour engaging talk at 10:00 AM on Saturday, 28 February 2026, diving into the diversity of local waters. You'll learn about 26 species of triplefins – as iconic to New Zealand fishes as wētā are to insects and kiwi to birds – along with sponge garden habitats, remarkable nudibranchs, and whitebait or inanga. It's a perfect way for parents, kids, and grandparents to bond over fascinating facts, encouraging conversations about conservation that extend beyond the event.
Following the talk, the hands-on fun continues in the Activity Centre with the Art Activation: Make Your Own Moving Fish. Participants create collage fish inspired by harbour species, then bring them to life using a simple stop-motion video technique – capturing a sequence of photos to create the illusion of movement. This creative outlet not only boosts imagination but also builds community ties as families collaborate and share their masterpieces. 🐟
