What is a Repair Café?

Repair Cafés are community-driven initiatives that emerged in Amsterdam in 2009 and have since spread worldwide. These gatherings bring together skilled volunteers and community members to combat throwaway culture and promote sustainable living.

These events serve multiple purposes:

  • Reducing landfill waste by extending the life of everyday items
  • Building community connections through shared knowledge
  • Helping people save money on replacements and repairs
  • Preserving repair skills and knowledge within the community
  • Creating social connections, particularly valuable for senior citizens

The concept aligns perfectly with New Zealand's commitment to sustainability and the traditional Kiwi "No. 8 wire" mentality of fixing and making do. By participating in a Repair Café, you're not just fixing your belongings - you're contributing to a more sustainable future and keeping valuable skills alive in your community.
