Why Community Exercise Programmes Matter in Aotearoa
Oranga Tonutanga (meaning "continued wellbeing") represents a holistic approach to health and fitness that honours both physical and cultural wellbeing. These community-based exercise programmes play a vital role in supporting hauora (wellbeing) across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Participating in culturally responsive exercise programmes like Oranga Tonutanga offers numerous benefits:
- Improved physical health - gentle, guided movement helps manage health conditions and improves strength and balance
- Mental wellbeing - regular exercise reduces stress and improves mood
- Community connection - exercising with others creates valuable social bonds
- Cultural engagement - programmes that respect Māori values foster a sense of belonging
- Professional support - having health professionals present makes exercise accessible for those with health concerns
The presence of both an exercise instructor and nurse ensures these classes are safe and effective for people across different ability levels. This supportive environment is particularly important for those who might otherwise feel anxious about beginning an exercise programme.
By offering entry by koha, Oranga Tonutanga removes financial barriers to participation, making wellbeing accessible to all community members. This approach reflects the importance of manaakitanga (hospitality and support) in creating inclusive health initiatives.
Whether you're returning to exercise after illness or injury, managing ongoing health conditions, or simply looking to improve your fitness in a supportive environment, community-based programmes like this provide the perfect starting point for your wellbeing journey. 🌱
