Description of Older & Bolder: Gentle Strength Class | Chartwell Hall

💪 Older & Bolder is a gentle exercise class designed specifically for older adults with limited mobility. This supportive class builds muscle strength and improves balance in a friendly, social environment at Chartwell Scout Hall.

Starting with seated exercises, we progress to standing movements (using chairs for support if needed), before finishing with a seated cooldown and stretching. Perfect for those using walking aids or feeling less confident with physical activity.

Class follows Age Concern's Steady As You Go 45-minute program. Participants consistently report greater confidence, increased strength, and improved ability to perform daily activities.

  • Venue: Chartwell Scout Hall, 61 Bellmont Avenue, Chartwell, Hamilton
  • Cost: $3 per session (first class free!)
  • What to bring: Comfortable clothes and snug-fitting sneakers or lace-up shoes
  • Before attending: Please phone 07 838 2266 to check for vacancies and arrive a few minutes early to complete registration

Benefits of Gentle Strength & Balance Classes for Seniors 🧓

Regular participation in gentle exercise classes like Older & Bolder provides numerous health benefits for older adults, particularly those with mobility challenges:

  • Improved balance and coordination - reducing fall risk, a common concern for older Kiwis
  • Increased muscle strength - making everyday activities easier and more manageable
  • Enhanced flexibility and joint mobility - helping to reduce stiffness and discomfort
  • Better posture - potentially alleviating back pain and improving breathing
  • Social connection - combating isolation while improving physical wellbeing

Gentle exercise is particularly valuable for those using walking aids or experiencing reduced mobility, as it can help maintain independence and confidence. The seated components ensure everyone can participate safely, while the option to use ankle weights allows for progression as strength improves.

Classes like Older & Bolder are designed to be non-intimidating and accommodating, with participants encouraged to work at their own pace. The supportive social environment helps build confidence alongside physical improvements.
