About Feijoas in New Zealand

Feijoas, often called pineapple guavas, have become an iconic autumn fruit in Aotearoa New Zealand. These small, green fruits with their distinctive aromatic flavour are a beloved backyard staple, with many Kiwi households having at least one feijoa tree.

The fruit typically ripens between March and June, often producing more than households can consume. This abundance sometimes leads to significant food waste, with many feijoas ending up in compost bins or landfills.

Common Uses for Feijoas:

  • Fresh eating - simply scooped out with a spoon
  • Baking - in cakes, muffins, and crumbles
  • Preserves - jams, chutneys, and jellies
  • Smoothies and juices
  • Frozen for year-round use

Learning to preserve and fully utilise feijoas not only reduces food waste but also helps maintain this cherished part of New Zealand's food culture. Through proper storage and creative usage, these versatile fruits can be enjoyed well beyond their natural season.
