About Relay For Life in New Zealand
Relay For Life is one of New Zealand's most significant community fundraising events, supporting the vital work of the Cancer Society. This powerful event brings communities together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer through fundraising and awareness.
The event format involves team members taking turns walking around a track, symbolising the ongoing fight against cancer. The relay typically includes three main ceremonies:
- Opening Ceremony: Celebrates cancer survivors and their caregivers
- Candlelight Ceremony: Honours those affected by cancer
- Closing Ceremony: Commits to continuing the fight against cancer
The University of Waikato's Hamilton campus provides an ideal setting for this community event, with its accessible pathways and modern facilities. The 12-hour format allows participants to engage in a meaningful way while supporting this crucial cause in the Waikato region.
