Benefits of Strength and Balance Training for Older Adults πͺ
Participating in regular strength and balance exercises offers numerous benefits for older Kiwis:
- Reduced fall risk: Balance training significantly decreases the likelihood of falls, a common concern as we age
- Increased independence: Maintaining strength helps with everyday activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and getting up from chairs
- Improved confidence: As physical abilities improve, many participants experience greater confidence in their movements
- Social connection: Group classes provide valuable social interaction, combating isolation
- Better overall health: Even gentle exercise improves circulation, joint health, and mood
Exercises focused on strengthening core muscles and improving stability are particularly important as we age. These exercises help maintain proper posture, which can reduce pain and improve breathing. Many participants find these classes provide a supportive environment where they can progress at their own pace without feeling pressured. π
The seated exercises make this class accessible for those who have difficulty standing for long periods, while standing and walking components gradually build capability for those ready for more challenge. This graduated approach allows everyone to participate safely while continuing to improve. πΆββοΈ
