Benefits of Chair-Based Exercise for Seniors and Those with Limited Mobility
Chair-based exercise classes like Upright & Active provide essential physical activity opportunities for older adults and those with mobility challenges. These specialised programmes offer numerous health benefits while minimising risk of falls or injury.
Regular participation in gentle strength and balance exercises can help:
- Improve stability and reduce fall risk - essential for maintaining independence
- Enhance muscle strength - particularly in the lower body for better mobility
- Increase flexibility and joint range of motion - making daily activities easier
- Boost cardiovascular health - through appropriate aerobic components
- Support cognitive function - through coordination challenges and mental engagement
- Combat social isolation - by creating regular social connections with peers
Chair-based exercise is particularly valuable because it provides secure support during balance activities, reduces joint pressure for those with arthritis or joint pain, and creates accessible exercise options for varying ability levels.
As one participant shares: "When I can't get to Upright and Active with Jenny, I really miss it. I always feel like I've had a good workout for body and mind. You've got to concentrate, which I'm not so good at, but there's no judgement. I also enjoy the fun and friendship. The group has really helped me get through the tough stuff in life."
