⚖️ Steady As You Go is a gentle, physiotherapy-based strength and balance programme designed for those with limited mobility. Join our friendly, weekly one-hour class at Valley Baptist Community Centre, featuring seated, standing and walking exercises led by trained Peer Leaders.

This supportive class is perfect for seniors looking to improve stability, prevent falls, and maintain independence in a social environment. Developed by Margaret Dando QSM and Age Concern Otago, these evidence-based exercises deliver proven results.

Building Strength & Balance for Better Mobility 🧠 👣

Maintaining balance and strength becomes increasingly important as we age. The Steady As You Go programme offers a scientifically-backed approach to reducing fall risk while improving overall wellbeing.

This gentle exercise class is based on the internationally renowned Otago Exercise Programme (OEP), developed by the University of Otago School of Physiotherapy and used by physiotherapists worldwide. Research shows participants experience:

  • Improved strength and balance after just ten weeks
  • Reduced falls and decreased falls risk
  • Enhanced awareness of posture and movement
  • Improved confidence and sense of wellbeing
  • Valuable social connections and new friendships

The programme incorporates a comprehensive range of exercises targeting key areas:

  • Balance exercises to improve stability
  • Flexibility and mobility movements
  • Postural awareness training
  • Brain gym and eye exercises for cognitive benefits
  • Proper breathing techniques

While designed primarily for those over 65, Steady As You Go welcomes anyone at risk of falling or those recovering from illness, surgery or injury. The supportive group environment encourages participants to work at their own pace, with rest breaks as needed.
