Benefits of Balance Training for Fall Prevention π§
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults in New Zealand, but they don't have to be inevitable. Regular balance and strength training can significantly reduce your fall risk while improving overall mobility and confidence.
The Steady As You Go programme is based on the internationally renowned Otago Exercise Programme, which has been proven to reduce falls by up to 35% in clinical studies. By focusing on key muscle groups and balance challenges, these exercises help maintain independence and quality of life.
- Improved stability: Targeted exercises strengthen the muscles that keep you upright and stable when walking or standing
- Better coordination: Regular practice helps your brain and body work together more effectively
- Increased confidence: As your physical abilities improve, you'll feel more secure in everyday activities
- Social connection: Exercise in a supportive group environment with others from your community
The social aspect of Steady As You Go classes is just as important as the physical benefits. Participants often form lasting friendships while supporting each other on their wellness journeys. The peer-led approach encourages ownership and sustainability within the community.
Whether you're recovering from a fall, concerned about your balance, or simply want to stay active and independent, this evidence-based programme provides a supportive environment to build the strength and confidence you need for daily life. π
