Benefits of Dance-Based Balance Training for Seniors
Dance-based balance training is an excellent way for older Kiwis to maintain and improve their physical wellbeing. πΊ These classes combine the joy of movement with practical exercises that help prevent falls - a significant concern for many seniors.
Originally designed by Matthew Onarheim-Smith, an ex-professional dancer and osteopath, Aligned to Go has been operating in Dunedin since 2018. Recent research shows participants experienced significant improvements in lower-leg strength and walking speed after just 10 weeks.
While primarily designed for those over 65, these classes benefit anyone at risk of falling. The combination of rhythm, movement, and social interaction creates a holistic approach to fitness that's both effective and enjoyable.
Regular participation in dance-based balance classes can help:
- Improve coordination and stability in everyday movements
- Build strength in key muscle groups that prevent falls
- Enhance flexibility and mobility for better quality of life
- Boost confidence in moving around independently
- Create social connections with like-minded community members
Unlike traditional exercise classes, these dance-based sessions make fitness fun and accessible. The variety of movements keeps participants engaged while gradually building their physical capabilities in a supportive group setting. π
