Why Pilates Is Great for Your Body and Mind
Pilates offers a comprehensive approach to fitness that focuses on developing core strength, improving posture, and creating balanced muscle development. Originally designed by Joseph Pilates, this exercise system has become popular in New Zealand for its effectiveness in building functional strength without adding bulk.
During this Pilates class at Arena Fitness and Boxing, you'll experience:
- Core engagement: Activating your deep abdominal muscles to support your spine and improve posture
- Controlled movements: Performing exercises with precision and focus rather than rushing through repetitions
- Full-body conditioning: Working multiple muscle groups simultaneously for efficient training
- Mind-body connection: Developing greater body awareness and concentration
- Improved flexibility: Lengthening muscles while simultaneously strengthening them
The mat-based format makes this class accessible while still offering plenty of challenges. Your instructor will demonstrate modifications to either simplify movements if you're newer to Pilates or intensify them if you're looking for more challenge.
Pilates complements other fitness activities by addressing muscle imbalances and improving core stability. Many Kiwi athletes incorporate Pilates into their training regimens for injury prevention and performance enhancement.
Wear comfortable exercise clothing that allows free movement. While mats are typically provided, you're welcome to bring your own if preferred. No special footwear is required as Pilates is performed barefoot or in socks.
