Breathe Easier with Specialised Exercise Support π¬οΈ
Better Breathers classes provide essential physical activity in a supportive group environment specifically designed for those with breathing difficulties. These sessions combine gentle exercise with breathing techniques to help improve your overall respiratory health and wellbeing.
Each 60-minute class includes:
- Targeted exercises for the upper body to relieve tension and enhance circulation
- Thoracic mobility work focusing on muscles around the lungs, abdomen, back, shoulders and neck
- Balance training to reduce fall risks
- Diaphragmatic breathing instruction (Belly Breathing)
- Relaxation techniques to reduce stress and anxiety
Participants can perform exercises while seated or standing with chair support, making the class accessible for various mobility levels. The class is open to anyone aged 65+ (or 55+ for MΔori and Pasifika), or those at increased risk of falling who can safely participate.
Remember to wear comfortable clothes and supportive shoes, bring any walking aids you normally use, take your medications as usual before class, and bring a water bottle and any necessary medications (inhalers, oxygen, etc.).
Many participants report not only physical improvements but also the social benefits of attending. As one member shared, "I keep coming to Better Breather classes because I know the exercise is good for me. I can get incredibly breathless during exercise, and I feel safe here. I come for the support and for the company."
