Experience the Ancient Benefits of Tai Chi Practice 🧘♀️
Tai Chi (also spelled Taiji) is an ancient Chinese practice that combines meditation with slow, deliberate movements, deep breathing and relaxation. Originally developed as a martial art, today it's practiced around New Zealand primarily for its health benefits.
Regular Tai Chi practice can help:
- Improve balance and reduce fall risk
- Increase flexibility and strength
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Enhance body awareness and mindfulness
- Support joint health and ease arthritis symptoms
Many Kiwis find Tai Chi particularly beneficial as they age. The gentle, low-impact nature of the movements means it's accessible even if you haven't exercised in years. You'll learn a series of postures that flow together in a slow, graceful manner, while breathing deeply and mindfully.
Each class typically includes warm-up exercises, instruction on Tai Chi principles, practice of movements and forms, and cool-down exercises. As you progress, you'll learn more complex sequences and develop a deeper understanding of the subtle energy work involved.
Unlike high-intensity workouts that leave you exhausted, Tai Chi often results in feeling energized and refreshed. Many practitioners report improved sleep, better concentration, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing.
No special equipment is needed - just comfortable clothes you can move in and flat, supportive shoes (or even bare feet). While initially challenging to learn the precise movements, most people find Tai Chi enjoyable from the very first class.
