Why Balance Training Matters for Older Adults

Balance and strength exercises are crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life as we age. The BUS programme at Parksyde offers a supportive environment where participants can work on these essential skills.

Regular attendance at balance and strength classes like BUS can provide numerous benefits:

  • Fall prevention - Research shows that balance training can reduce fall risk by up to 30%
  • Improved confidence - Feel more secure during everyday activities
  • Enhanced mobility - Maintain the ability to move independently
  • Better posture - Reduce pain and improve alignment
  • Increased strength - Perform daily tasks more easily
  • Social connection - Meet others in a friendly, supportive environment

The exercises taught in BUS classes are specifically designed to target the muscle groups and movement patterns most important for maintaining balance and preventing falls. Many participants notice improvements in their stability and confidence after just a few weeks of regular practice.

These classes are particularly valuable for anyone who:

  • Has experienced a fall or near-fall
  • Feels unsteady when walking or standing
  • Uses a walking aid or is concerned about needing one
  • Wants to maintain independence and mobility
  • Is looking for a gentle, effective exercise option

No special equipment or prior experience is needed - just wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. The friendly, non-competitive atmosphere makes these classes perfect for beginners and those returning to exercise after a break.
