John Smith
John Smith is a landscape painter living just outside of Whangarei, in the heart of Northland. A lifelong outdoorsman and former horticulturist, John brings a deep connection to the land into every brushstroke. His paintings are known for their rich texture and ability to evoke the peaceful stillness of Northland’s bush, bays, and farmland. John took up painting seriously in his early 50s after years of dabbling in sketchbooks and weekend watercolours. Now, he paints full-time from a small home studio surrounded by native trees. He frequently participates in local art fairs and group exhibitions, and his work is held in private collections across Aotearoa. Using his artist dashboard, John shares new artwork, lists upcoming exhibitions, and runs an online shop for limited-edition prints and original pieces.

Portfolio
Emerging Light
This evolving piece captures the early stages of a Northland hillside just as dawn begins to break through the mist. The composition focuses on soft contours and atmospheric light, with a muted palette that will gradually build toward depth and detail.

Process
This piece began with a loose charcoal sketch to map out the landscape’s structure, followed by an underpainting in warm greys and earth tones. I'm currently layering in mid tones using oils, working from back to front to slowly build atmosphere. The next stage will focus on refining light in the sky and introducing subtle contrast in the foreground.
