Colin McCahon was a groundbreaking New Zealand artist, known for his powerful landscapes and bold use of words in painting. Born in Timaru in 1919, he grew up in Dunedin and studied at the Dunedin School of Art. His work often explored themes of faith, doubt, and the New Zealand environment. McCahon reimagined biblical stories in local settings and developed a unique style that combined text, abstract forms, and natural landscapes. He worked at the Auckland City Art Gallery and later taught at Elam School of Fine Arts, influencing many younger artists. Today, McCahon is widely recognised as one of Aotearoa’s most important modern artists.

Between Earth and Sky
This large-scale panel work explores the spiritual weight of the New Zealand landscape, where sweeping forms of hills and sky are interrupted by fragments of handwritten text. Inspired by the rugged coastline of Northland, the painting acts as a meditation on solitude, faith, and place.
Process
McCahon began with charcoal sketches made during a walking trip near Hokianga. He then worked on unstretched canvas using house paint and brushes of varying width. Layers of black and earthy ochres were applied first, with text added in a final expressive layer. The handwritten words were sourced from personal reflections and scripture.
The Light Within
A minimalist text-based work, The Light Within combines stark black backgrounds with luminous white lettering to express McCahon’s ongoing search for clarity, hope, and divine presence. The painting invites viewers into a quiet space of contemplation.
Process
Created in his Auckland studio during a period of personal struggle, McCahon used flat panels and enamel paint for a sharp, high-contrast finish. The words were first drafted in notebooks, then directly painted by hand—intentionally imperfect to emphasise vulnerability and human touch.
