This Green Drinks is an exciting opportunity to learn what happens to tons of clothing destined for landfill but is rescued and converted into everyday useful materials!Judy Keats, Environmental Educator with EcoSolutions, will be presenting on the Textile Recycling Network, a recent initiative lead by CBEC (Community Business and Environment Centre) with funding from the Ministry for the Environment. Since August 2025 in Te Tai Tokerau, three centres have been in operation working with local op shops to turn garment ‘waste’ into useful products. In Whangārei, three main op shops supply regular donations of unsold clothing for processing into mattresses, home insulation and weed matting. Volunteers, which include Timebank members earning time credits, remove buttons, zips, studs etc and sew mattress covers. All Heart NZ transport the processed textiles to Textile NZ in Auckland where they are upcycled.Green Drinks is open to everyone to enjoy, so come along on Tues 19th May at 6pm to hear more about the project, see products made from recycled clothing, meet volunteers and enjoy connecting with like-minded locals!Where: 141A Cameron Street, WhangāreiWhen: 6pm – 7.30pmRefreshments providedFor more info contact: judy@cbec.co.nz or janeype.tttimebank@gmail.com

This workshop is a must if you want to make your own felted slippers! Whangārei Timebank member, Shanti Land, taught herself to make these cosy slippers and is happy to share her creative experience with others. She will guide the workshop, but she’s open to input from participants as it’s an ever-evolving process for her.You’re contribution to the workshop starts beforehand! © Buy your own fleece for felting. It must be washed and carded.© If you’d like your slippers to have leather soles – bring pieces along - making sure they’re bigger than your feet!© Felting is a very wet process, so you’ll need to bring the following items as it’ll make the process much easier for you:© A couple of large towels; netting bags to felt the slippers in; liquid or bar soap, to lather up the fleece to enable felting; a rectangular plastic basin (with low sides) to contain the water as you felt.© Duct tape or wide insulation tape – this holds the felted material together while you work it.Timebank members: 4 time creditsNon Timebank members: $10 Places are limited, so please register with Janey: janeype.tttimebank@gmail.comIf you have any queries, please feel free to email them to me!
