The Russell Centennial Trust Board is the overarching administration of the building and land at 2 York Street, Russell, which it owns and is occupied by the Russell Community Library, Russell Museum - Te Whare Pupuri Taonga o Kororāreka, and The Hub, a gallery, workshop, meeting, and multipurpose arts space. Russell Museum - Te Whare Pupuri Taonga o Kororāreka is a community museum and Māori Keeping Place (in partnership with Kororāreka Marae) established in 1950 to preserve, showcase, and promote the dual heritage taonga and nationally significant stories relating to Russell Kororāreka and the wider takiwā of Te Rūnanga o Taumare ki Raukaumaungamaunga, to inform our shared future. The Museum is a much valued community, tourism and educational asset for Russell Kororāreka, presenting a permanent display on pre-European history, Māori navigation and occupation, first encounters with European explorers - Captain Cook, Du Fresne; European settlement and Charles Darwin's visit on the Beagle, the origins of the Northern War, the Girls War, NZ's first capital, and many more stories. The Museum curates and receives temporary art and heritage exhibitions, it has a family history and local history archive and research facilities, provides built heritage advice, and education programmes. The Community Library is Russell's only library, and independent of Far North District Council's network of libraries.
