Description of Thelonious Punk Lunchtime concert

Formed in 2009 by drummer Bevan O’Brien, Thelonious Punk began as a collective of musicians inspired by the sounds of Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, and Freddie Hubbard. Since then, it has evolved into a Northland-based group known for performing original compositions and modern jazz covers at arts and music festivals throughout the region.

Thelonious Punk has also served as a launchpad for emerging jazz talent in Northland. The group has welcomed a rotating lineup of young musicians, many of whom have gone on to pursue successful careers in larger music scenes. Their repertoire spans a wide range of jazz styles — from standards and post-bop to jazz-rock, modal, and Latin jazz.

The current core lineup features Bevan O’Brien (drums), Andy Kingston (guitar and bass), and John Bell (piano and cornet).

This performance is part of our lunchtime concert series, offering a vibrant mid-day music experience for audiences of all ages.

With support from Oakridge Villas.
