Benefits of Strength and Balance Exercise for Seniors
Regular strength and balance training is vital for maintaining independence and quality of life as we age. These specialized classes offer numerous health benefits specifically designed for older adults:
Fall Prevention: Falls are a major health concern for Kiwi seniors, with one in three people over 65 experiencing a fall each year. Targeted balance exercises significantly reduce this risk by improving stability and coordination.
Muscle Preservation: From age 50, we naturally lose 1-2% of muscle mass annually. Resistance training helps counteract this loss, maintaining functional strength for everyday activities like:
- Rising from chairs
- Climbing stairs
- Carrying groceries
- Getting in and out of cars
Bone Health: Weight-bearing exercise stimulates bone formation, helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures - particularly important for post-menopausal women.
Improved Mobility: Regular movement helps maintain joint flexibility and range of motion, reducing stiffness and making daily activities more comfortable.
Social Connection: Group exercise classes provide valuable social interaction, combating isolation and promoting mental wellbeing - a key factor in healthy aging.
Adaptable for All Abilities: Chair-based components make these classes accessible even for those with mobility limitations or who are new to exercise.
The Ministry of Health recommends older adults do strength and balance activities at least twice weekly. Classes like Strong & Steady offer expert guidance to ensure exercises are performed correctly and safely while providing the right level of challenge for continued improvement.
Many participants report benefits beyond physical improvements, including:
- Increased confidence in movement
- Better sleep quality
- Enhanced mood and mental clarity
- Greater energy for daily activities
Comfortable clothing and supportive footwear are recommended. Remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the session.
