A gentle, focused, physiotherapy-based programme

A programme of strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, postural, brain gym and eye exercises with breathing instructions in a friendly, weekly, one hour class with seated, standing and walking exercises led by Peer Leaders trained by Age Concern Otago.

What to expect

Steady As You Go © is suitable for anyone wishing to improve their balance and mobility or for those who have been ill or just completed a Physiotherapy course after surgery or an injury.

Beginning in 2003, Steady As You Go © was developed by Margaret Dando QSM, Age Concern Otago and is based on the proven Otago Exercise Programme (OEP) used by physiotherapists around the world and the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago “Train the Trainer” programme.

The programme has been evaluated by research teams at the University of Otago and findings include:

  • Improved strength and balance at ten weeks
  • Improvements in strength and balance continue in long term classes
  • Reduced falls and reduced falls risk
  • High rates of participation
  • Increased awareness of posture, movement and falls risk
  • Daily life improved through improved physical benefits
  • Peer leadership role highly valued
  • Improved sense of wellbeing and confidence
  • Social benefits from belonging to a group and friendships made

Who can join

Our classes are designed for over 65s but accept all who are at risk of falling.

What to bring and wear

Flat shoes and comfortable clothes and a water bottle are recommended, and participants are encouraged to take a rest as they need.
