Benefits of Balance & Strength Training for Seniors
Regular balance and strength exercises are crucial for maintaining independence and preventing falls as we age. The Steady As You Go programme is based on the internationally recognized Otago Exercise Programme, developed right here in New Zealand.
Research from the University of Otago has shown these exercises can:
- Significantly reduce the risk of falls
- Improve strength and balance within just ten weeks
- Continue to provide physical benefits in long-term participants
- Enhance posture and movement awareness
- Boost confidence in daily activities
The social aspect of these classes is just as valuable as the physical benefits. Many participants form lasting friendships and enjoy the regular social interaction, which contributes to overall wellbeing and mental health.
β¨ While designed primarily for those over 65, these classes welcome anyone at risk of falling or wanting to improve their stability. The supportive group environment makes it easier to stay motivated and committed to regular exercise.
The peer-led structure of these classes creates a relaxed, non-intimidating atmosphere where participants can work at their own pace while still receiving proper guidance on technique and form.
