Benefits of Balance Training for Seniors in NZ
β Balance exercises are crucial for older Kiwis wanting to maintain independence and prevent falls. The Steady As You Go programme was developed by Age Concern Otago based on the internationally recognised Otago Exercise Programme created by the University of Otago.
Research shows regular participation in these classes provides multiple benefits:
- Reduced risk of falls and injuries
- Improved strength and mobility
- Enhanced confidence in daily activities
- Better posture and body awareness
- Valuable social connections with others
Classes are supportive and progress at your own pace, making them ideal for:
- Those recovering from surgery or illness
- People concerned about their balance
- Anyone wanting to maintain mobility as they age
- Seniors looking to combine physical activity with social connection
While designed primarily for those 65+, these classes welcome anyone concerned about falls or wanting to improve their balance. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes, and remember to bring a water bottle. Rest breaks are encouraged throughout the session.
Join our friendly South Dunedin group to experience the physical and social benefits that have made this programme successful throughout New Zealand. No prior fitness experience required - just a willingness to move at your own pace in a supportive environment.
