Benefits of Strength & Balance Exercises for Older Adults 🌟

Regular strength and balance training offers numerous benefits that can significantly improve quality of life as we age:

  • Fall Prevention: Improved balance and stronger muscles reduce the risk of falls, a common concern for many Kiwi seniors.
  • Increased Independence: Better mobility and strength make everyday activities easier, helping maintain independence for longer.
  • Social Connection: Group classes provide valuable social interaction and peer support, combating isolation many older adults experience.
  • Boosted Confidence: As physical abilities improve, so does confidence in navigating daily activities and environments.
  • Improved Mental Wellbeing: Exercise releases endorphins that enhance mood and reduce anxiety and depression.

The Steady As You Go programme follows principles from the evidence-based Otago Exercise Programme, which has been shown to reduce falls by up to 35% in older adults. Classes begin with an Age Concern trained instructor and eventually transition to a peer-led model using audio guidance.

This supportive environment makes exercise accessible for those who might otherwise feel intimidated by traditional gym settings. The focus is on gradual improvement at your own pace, with options to increase challenge as you progress.

No special equipment or clothing is needed - just wear comfortable clothes you can move in and bring a water bottle. Join our friendly community and take a positive step toward better health and wellbeing. πŸ’ͺ
