Why Balance Training Matters for Seniors π§ π΅π§ββοΈ
Balance and strength exercises are vital for maintaining independence and preventing falls as we age. The Steady As You Go programme has been scientifically evaluated by the University of Otago with impressive results including reduced falls risk and improved quality of life.
Regular balance training helps:
- Prevent falls and injuries
- Maintain independence longer
- Improve confidence in daily activities
- Enhance mobility and coordination
- Strengthen muscles that support joints
- Improve posture and stability
Many participants report not just physical benefits but also mental wellbeing improvements. The social aspect of group exercise provides motivation and accountability while combating isolation that often affects older Kiwis.
The Steady As You Go programme is particularly valuable for those who:
- Have recently experienced a fall
- Feel unsteady when walking
- Use walking aids
- Are recovering from surgery or illness
- Want to maintain independence and confidence
Each session follows a carefully structured format developed by physiotherapists to progressively build strength and balance while keeping participants safe. Rest periods are encouraged, and exercises can be modified to suit individual capabilities.
