Benefits of Balance & Strength Training for Older Adults πͺ
Regular balance and strength training offers numerous benefits for seniors and those with mobility challenges. Developed in 2003 by Margaret Dando QSM and Age Concern Otago, the Steady As You Go programme is based on the internationally recognized Otago Exercise Programme used by physiotherapists worldwide.
University research has shown that participants experience:
- Improved strength and balance starting from just ten weeks
- Reduced risk of falls and injuries
- Greater confidence in daily activities
- Enhanced overall mobility and independence
- Better posture and body awareness
- Valuable social connections and new friendships
The exercises focus on key areas that help maintain independence and quality of life:
- Lower body strength for climbing stairs and rising from chairs
- Core stability for better posture and back health
- Balance training to prevent falls
- Flexibility exercises to maintain range of motion
- Brain gym activities for cognitive health
What makes these classes special is their accessibility. You don't need prior fitness experience, special equipment, or exceptional mobility to participate. The supportive atmosphere encourages everyone to work at their own pace with modifications available as needed.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes, and to bring a water bottle. Rest breaks are welcomed whenever needed, ensuring everyone can participate safely regardless of fitness level.
Join our Kurow Steady As You Go community today and take a positive step toward better health, mobility and wellbeing! π
