Benefits of Balance & Strength Training for Seniors π
Balance and strength training is essential for maintaining independence and quality of life as we age. The "Steady As You Go" programme, developed in 2003 by Margaret Dando QSM and Age Concern Otago, is based on the internationally recognized Otago Exercise Programme used by physiotherapists worldwide.
Research from the University of Otago has shown these classes deliver significant benefits:
- πͺ Improved strength and balance that continues long-term
- π‘οΈ Reduced falls and decreased falls risk
- π₯ Valuable social connections and friendships
- β¬οΈ Enhanced confidence and sense of wellbeing
- πββοΈ Better posture, movement and everyday functioning
These gentle exercise sessions incorporate strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, postural, brain gym and eye exercises with breathing instructions. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and take breaks as needed.
The supportive group environment and peer leadership model has proven highly effective, with high participation rates and consistent improvements among attendees. While designed primarily for those over 65, the class welcomes anyone at risk of falling or wanting to improve their balance and mobility.
Regular attendance can help maintain independence, prevent falls, and improve overall quality of life - all in a friendly, supportive Kiwi atmosphere where everyone is welcome regardless of fitness level or experience.
