Benefits of Balance & Strength Training for Seniors
Regular participation in gentle strength and balance exercises offers numerous benefits for older adults, particularly those with mobility concerns:
- Reduced fall risk: Improved stability and coordination help prevent accidents
- Increased independence: Better mobility means maintaining daily activities
- Enhanced confidence: Feeling stronger leads to greater participation in social activities
- Social connection: Weekly classes provide regular community engagement
- Better posture: Targeted exercises improve alignment and reduce pain
This programme is based on the internationally recognized Otago Exercise Programme developed by the University of Otago. Research shows participants experience significant improvements in strength and balance within ten weeks, with benefits continuing long-term.
The class includes flexibility, mobility, postural, brain gym and eye exercises with breathing instructions. Each component is designed to address specific aspects of physical wellbeing that commonly decline with age.
While designed primarily for over-65s, these classes welcome anyone at risk of falling or looking to improve their balance in a supportive, non-competitive environment.
