Benefits of Balance & Strength Training for Seniors 🌿
Steady As You Go is an evidence-based programme developed by Age Concern Otago in 2003. Based on the internationally recognised Otago Exercise Programme, these classes are specifically designed to improve balance, strength and mobility for older adults.
Research from the University of Otago has shown that regular participation in these classes leads to:
- Reduced fall risk - improved stability and confidence when moving
- Increased strength - making everyday activities easier
- Better balance - improvements begin within weeks and continue long-term
- Social connection - form friendships and enjoy group support
- Improved wellbeing - boost your mood and confidence
This class is particularly valuable for those who:
- Use walking aids or have limited mobility
- Are recovering from illness, surgery or injury
- Feel unsteady on their feet
- Want to maintain independence
- Are looking for a gentle exercise option
While designed for those 65+, the class welcomes anyone looking to reduce their fall risk. The supportive atmosphere ensures everyone can work at their own pace, with options to rest as needed. The combination of strength, balance and mobility exercises provides a holistic approach to movement that carries over into daily activities.
