Archaeology Tour for Everyone

Step into New Zealand's rich past with the Special Archaeology Tour at Butler Point, a hands-on journey through Māori and early European history. This event, part of New Zealand Archaeology Week, invites you to connect with the stories that shaped Mangonui and Doubtless Bay. On Sunday 10th May, starting at 11:00am, renowned archaeologists Dr Justin Maxwell and Dr Jennifer Hubert Maxwell will lead the way, offering expert insights into the site's heritage.

The tour kicks off with a guided walking exploration of Moehuri pā and out to the point, where you'll uncover layers of history from ancient Māori settlements to early European arrivals. After a 12:00pm interval—bring your own picnic, with tea and coffee provided complimentary—the adventure continues at 12:30pm with a Butler Point guide. You'll visit the Whaling Museum and the 1840s homestead, bringing the era to life through preserved artefacts and tales of whaling and settlement.

Lasting about 3 hours, this tour is suitable for all ages, with kids going free, making it perfect for families or groups keen to share a learning experience. Entry fees are $45 for adults, $40 for seniors, and $15 for students—advance booking is essential due to limited spots. Dress for the weather in active wear and sturdy shoes, as the terrain includes rough and steep sections not suitable for wheelchairs. It's an ideal outing for grandparents bringing grandchildren, fostering intergenerational bonds while discovering our shared cultural story.

By joining, you're not just touring; you're supporting community efforts to preserve and celebrate Northland's heritage. This welcoming event encourages social connections, sparking conversations about identity and history among locals and visitors alike. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious, it's a chance to engage with experts and peers in a relaxed, educational setting. Learn more about Dr Justin Maxwell, Dr Jennifer Hubert Maxwell, and their work at Sunrise Archaeology via www.sunarc.co.nz.
