Benefits of Strength Training for Older Adults
🏋️♀️ Regular strength training becomes increasingly important as we age. For Kiwi seniors, maintaining muscle mass and bone density helps prevent falls and supports continued independence in daily activities.
Research shows that adults over 50 who participate in consistent resistance training experience:
- Improved balance and coordination
- Reduced risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures
- Better joint health and reduced arthritis symptoms
- Enhanced mental wellbeing and cognitive function
- Greater energy levels for everyday activities
The Active Wellness programme focuses on functional movements that translate directly to real-life activities. By practicing getting up and down from the floor, participants build confidence in their ability to navigate potential fall situations and maintain independence.
💬 As past participant Carl shares: "These classes have been a huge boost to my strength, balance and mental health, allowing me to continue kayaking and mountain biking well past my 83rd birthday."
The social aspect of group fitness should not be underestimated. Many Active Wellness participants form lasting friendships, providing motivation to attend regularly and creating a supportive community of like-minded active seniors.
Classes like Active Wellness help bridge the gap between basic senior fitness programmes and more intensive gym workouts, offering appropriate challenges for those who already maintain an active lifestyle but want structured guidance to progress safely.
