Welcome to Whangarei Steam and Model Railway Club Inc

The Whangarei Steam & Model Railway Club is a dedicated hobbies and special interests club for model railway enthusiasts. The organisation focuses on preserving New Zealand's railway heritage and offers various activities for its members and the community.

The club maintains and operates a railway track, approximately 2 kilometres in length, at the Whangarei Museum and Heritage Park. This railway features diesel and steam locomotives, jiggers, and two restored 1924 trams. These are available for public rides on designated running days. The club's facilities can also be chartered for private events such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and company parties.

Members engage in sharing knowledge, building intricate model replicas, and celebrating railway history. The club also maintains detailed model train layouts that depict Whangarei's coal and mining heritage. Opportunities are available for members to learn to drive diesel locomotives and trams, train as a guard, and develop engineering and modelling skills.

Meetings

Club members meet and operate on Mondays and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Public rides are offered on the third Sunday of every month from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Diesel locomotives also operate on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during school holidays.
