Welcome to the Shire of Darton

History comes alive at the Shire of Darton, a passionate historical club and the Wellington branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). As part of a global non-profit organisation, we are dedicated to recreating the finest aspects of pre-17th century life, spanning European and other cultures. What makes our club truly special is the emphasis on practical experience. Members don’t just study medieval history—they live it through hands-on activities like fighting, archery, costuming, embroidery, dancing, music, calligraphy, cooking, brewing, metalwork, and carpentry. From feasts and balls to tournaments and encampments, there’s something for everyone in our vibrant community. Our family-friendly, non-religious, and gender-neutral environment welcomes all who share a love for the past, with the only requirements being an attempt at pre-1600 clothing and treating fellow participants with courtesy and respect.

At the heart of New Zealand’s capital, the Shire of Darton proudly serves the Wellington area as a hub for historical enthusiasts. We also have a dedicated sub-group in the Wairarapa, connecting members from Featherston, Carterton, and Masterton. Our frequent gatherings and weekly meetings for arts, sciences, and combat training provide endless opportunities to engage with like-minded individuals across the region. Additionally, we host ‘collegiums’—specialised classes that dive into both theoretical and practical topics related to medieval life. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, our Wellington-based historical club offers a unique chance to step into the past while building lasting connections with others who share your passion.

While fees apply for certain activities and combat training has a minimum age requirement, you don’t need to be a member to participate in some of our events. From rapier combat to intricate illumination, our diverse range of pursuits ensures there’s always something new to learn or experience.
