Welcome to Riversdale Beach Surf Lifesaving Club

Aspiring to make a difference on the coast? Riversdale Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, established in 1955, is a vital part of the surf lifesaving community in New Zealand. As a dedicated sports and recreation club, we focus on training and developing skilled surf lifeguards who ensure safety along our stunning beaches. Our patrol season runs from Labour Weekend to Easter, providing essential services to locals and visitors alike. Whether you're 14 or older and ready to take on the Surf Lifeguard Award exam or you're an experienced lifeguard looking to refresh your skills, our club offers a welcoming environment to grow and contribute.

Stationed at Riversdale Beach in the Wellington region, specifically within the Masterton district, our club is perfectly positioned to serve a vibrant coastal community. This beautiful location is not only a hub for beachgoers but also a prime spot for surf lifesaving activities. The challenging surf conditions here provide the ideal training ground for lifeguards to hone their skills through rigorous exams and refresher tests. Our presence in Wellington ensures that we play a key role in regional safety, collaborating with other clubs to maintain high standards across the board.

Path to Becoming a Surf Lifeguard

Becoming a qualified surf lifeguard at our club is a rewarding journey. Candidates must be at least 14 years old and pass the comprehensive Surf Lifeguard Award exam, which tests physical endurance, practical skills, and theoretical knowledge. The exam includes a 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes, a run/swim/run in the surf, resuscitation and rescue tests, theory questions, and a practical surf knowledge assessment. For active lifeguards, a seasonal refresher test ensures fitness and readiness through swims, first aid questions, and resuscitation scenarios.
