Otamatea Aero Club is a dedicated aero club fostering aviation hobbies and special interests among enthusiasts in New Zealand. Operating from Ruawai Airfield, the club provides a welcoming space for members to engage with flying activities using our club plane, the Alpi 200 microlight LPR. Established in 1964 by a syndicate of members each contributing 100 pounds, the club quickly gained popularity, leading to the airfield's opening in 1965. It formally became an incorporated society on 27th October 1967, solidifying its place in the local aviation community. Club days are held on Sundays, offering opportunities for members to connect and enjoy the skies.

Scenic Location and Access

Our aero club is ideally situated at Ruawai Airfield, located 5km west of the Ruawai township along State Highway 12, Ruawai 0592, in the Northland region. The airfield's position allows for breathtaking views, with beautiful scenery surrounding us on all sides. To the south-west, the beach stretches towards North Head, while to the east lies a fiord-like area around Pahi. To locate the field, follow the Wairoa River and watch for a gap in the line of trees; the airfield is the next field north-west. Runway 07 is clearly marked by an arrow, making it accessible for aviation activities in this picturesque Northland setting.

The origins of Otamatea Aero Club trace back to 1964, when a group of aviation enthusiasts formed a syndicate to bring their shared vision to life. This initial investment of 100 pounds per member laid the foundation for what would become a thriving hub for microlight flying and aero club gatherings. By 1965, the demand had grown sufficiently to officially open Ruawai Airfield, marking a milestone in local aviation history.
