Welcome to Heretaunga Boating Club
Making waves since 1906, Heretaunga Boating Club is a cherished dinghy sailing club in the heart of Wellington’s sailing community. We are a small, family-oriented club dedicated to fostering a love for sailing among all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn the ropes, an aspiring racer seeking coaching, or an experienced sailor looking for competitive action, our club has something for everyone. Affiliated with Yachting New Zealand, we offer a structured junior sailing programme, adult one-on-one instruction, and plenty of opportunities for family participation. Our sailing season runs from October to April, with regular Saturday sessions starting at 9:00am for juniors, followed by afternoon racing at 2:00pm. With main boat classes like Optimist, Starling, Fevas, Sunburst, and Lasers, there’s a vessel for every sailor at our club.

Perfectly positioned on the Petone foreshore at 138 The Esplanade, Petone, Lower Hutt, our club boasts one of the safest beaches in the Wellington region for dinghy sailing. Petone’s calm waters and accessible shoreline make it an ideal spot for both learning and competitive sailing. Situated just a short drive from central Wellington, we’re easily reachable for local families and sailing enthusiasts looking to join a tight-knit community. Our location offers a scenic backdrop for Saturday races and social sailing events, ensuring every outing is a memorable experience on the water.
What We Offer
At Heretaunga Boating Club, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming hub for Wellington sailing. Our junior sailing programme uses a fleet of training Optimists and RS Fevas to teach young sailors the fundamentals, while also providing leadership opportunities for our youth and volunteers. For adults, we offer tailored one-on-one instruction to help you build confidence on the water. Our Saturday schedule is packed with action—junior sailing kicks off in the morning, followed by two back-to-back afternoon races with separate starts for Starlings, Sunburst, and Open classes. Whether you’re looking to race competitively or enjoy a casual sail, our club caters to all.
