The Canterbury Mountaineering Club is renowned for its rich history and dedication to outdoor exploration, having been formed on 10 April 1925 with an initial membership of around 27 adventurers. Originally established as a tramping club, it quickly became a hub for those passionate about the outdoors, organising regular outings on the Port Hills around Christchurch and venturing further into the foothills of Canterbury. Today, the club continues this legacy, offering a welcoming space for trampers and mountaineers to build skills, share experiences, and tackle challenging terrains.

Members can look forward to a diverse calendar of activities that cater to various interests in tramping and climbing. Weekly Climb nights provide hands-on practice and camaraderie, while monthly Club nights foster connections through talks and social gatherings. The club also runs instruction courses to enhance safety and techniques in mountain environments. A key highlight is the club's ownership of nine non-bookable huts and two member-only lodges in the Canterbury and Mount Cook regions, available for free or discounted use to members, ensuring affordable access to remote wilderness areas.
