Attracted to the plentiful, fecund/fertile shapes in nature I take delight in replicating and celebrating their unique and individual forms, imbuing them with my own aesthetic. Creating from and with nature has long been a way for me to stay connected to myself and my environment.

I am drawn to the minutiae found in Nature, especially objects that are often bypassed or go unnoticed. Working closely from found objects so that when up-scaling these into ‘life-size’, I invite the viewer to re-examine their relationship with Nature. My artworks give a sensual experience as well as a visual one. Careful attention to detail, whether in form, surface or shadow is central to my practice and works.

Born and living in New Zealand (Hokianga) I have always been intrigued by natural forms, I have an enjoyment of working with wood and a love and desire to work with my hands, this has been directed into my 19 year career as an artist, I participate in group and solo exhibitions regularly, my art is in national and international collections, including Italy, Germany, Spain, America, Denmark, England and Australia. In 2016 I had a 10 week artist residency in Denmark.

Canvas Wire Sculptures

The Canvas/Wire series comes from a desire to push the 2D boundary.

Form, surface and shadow are an integral part of my artworks.

Puriri Moths are both
delicate and strong
in the same moment.
I hoped to portray
both those feelings
in this sculpture.
The Monstera Leaf
sculpture is a celebration of form and colour
within Nature.
The Nikau
sits boldly
in the NZ
landscape.
Amazing forms
and shadows
are created
by the
over-layers
of leaves.
Manuka flowers are
such bright happy things,
not long lasting, and
falling like snow
in a hot
New Zealand landscape.

These works sit closely at the intersection between 2D and 3D, being cut canvas they are flat .. then with wire sewn in and hanging points to hold them out from the wall, giving movement and shadow.

Pohutukawa Leaves

For me these represent that feeling of coming across an intense coloured leaf lying on the ‘drab’ forest floor … and that desire to pick it up and take it home, keeping the colours and feelings of Nature close to you.

Honesty Pods

I like to bring to the fore childhood memories, of ‘pretend’ money and a play on it’s name, a word not often allied with money.

The tiny Honesty Pods (Lunaris annua) tap into the wealth of meaning with an instantly recognisable object, at once iconic and ubiquitous. A perfect form just coming into existence and beginning to display signs of future potential.

Tiny Pohutukawa Leaf Earrings
Process

sizes 5 - 7 cm x 3 cm (each) - Hooks 3 cm

Materials : Acrylics on cut canvas. 3 cm Kidney hooks, nickel free silver plate over brass. Surfaced to handle wearing, but not getting overly wet eg not for the pool or the shower :-)

These earrings are painted as tiny canvas’s, I now paint the backs as though it’s the back of a mottled leaf or pod, with the addition of my name and an inventory number.

Leaves Leaves and more Leaves

My Leaf works are a celebration of that small unexpected surprise you get when walking in Nature and of the desire to take home the leaf that stands out among the drab forest floor.

Gondwana Leaf - the biggest I make :-)

Process

Form, surface and shadow are an integral part of my artworks. The leaves sit closely at the intersection between 2D and 3D, being cut canvas they are flat .. then they are hung on gallery pins, which holds them out from the wall, giving movement and shadow, reminiscent of the dappled forest.
